Design and Build Quality: Aesthetic and Functional Excellence
The Marantz AV8805A boasts a sleek, modern design that fits well into any home theater setup. Its robust chassis is constructed from high-quality materials, ensuring durability while minimizing resonance that could affect sound quality. The front panel features an elegant layout with a large display, allowing for easy navigation and control. The unit's weight, approximately 20.5 kg (45 lbs), speaks to its build quality and the components housed within.
On the back, the AV8805A is equipped with an extensive array of inputs and outputs, including 13.2 channel pre-outs, multiple HDMI inputs (including 8K compatible ports), and various digital and analog connections. This extensive connectivity is essential for those looking to integrate multiple devices into their home theater system.
Compared to competitors like the Denon AVR-X8500HA and the Anthem AVM 70, the Marantz AV8805A stands out with its superior build quality and aesthetic appeal. While the Denon model offers similar features, its design lacks the refined elegance of the Marantz. The Anthem AVM 70, although highly regarded for its audio performance, does not match the Marantz in terms of connectivity options and ease of use.
Performance: Audio and Video Mastery
When it comes to performance, the Marantz AV8805A excels in both audio and video processing. The advanced 8K upscaling capability ensures that your content looks stunning on compatible displays, with crisp details and vibrant colors. This feature is particularly beneficial for those who own 8K TVs or projectors, as it enhances the viewing experience of lower-resolution content.
In terms of audio, the AV8805A supports a wide range of formats, including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Auro-3D, allowing for a truly immersive surround sound experience. During testing, the unit delivered exceptional clarity and depth, making it suitable for both movie watching and music listening. The Audyssey MultEQ XT32 calibration system further enhances audio performance by automatically adjusting the sound output based on your room's acoustics.
In comparison to similar models, the AV8805A holds its ground exceptionally well. The Denon AVR-X8500HA offers comparable audio performance, but the Marantz edges out with its superior upscaling technology and user-friendly interface. The Anthem AVM 70, while offering excellent audio quality, does not provide the same level of video processing capabilities.
Connectivity and Streaming: Modern Features for Today’s User
The Marantz AV8805A is designed with modern connectivity in mind. It features built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AirPlay 2, allowing you to stream music and audio from various devices effortlessly. The HEOS technology enables multi-room audio streaming, making it easy to enjoy your favorite music throughout your home.
Additionally, the inclusion of Amazon Alexa support means you can control the AV8805A using voice commands, enhancing convenience for users who prefer hands-free operation. This integration is particularly appealing for those who have already invested in a smart home ecosystem.
When compared to the Denon AVR-X8500HA, the Marantz offers a more extensive range of streaming options, including better integration with HEOS. The Anthem AVM 70, while also capable of streaming, lacks the same level of versatility and user-friendly features found in the Marantz.

During a home theater setup, the unit was paired with a 4K UHD Blu-ray player and an 8K projector. The advanced 8K upscaling feature was particularly impressive, enhancing 4K content to near-8K quality, making action scenes and vibrant landscapes pop with clarity.
For audio testing, a variety of genres were played, including orchestral music, rock, and cinematic soundtracks. The AV8805A’s ability to render sound with precision and depth was evident, with distinct separation between channels and a well-defined soundstage. The Audyssey calibration system effectively adapted the audio output to the room's acoustics, significantly improving the listening experience in a less-than-ideal room setup.
In comparison to the Denon AVR-X8500HA, the Marantz offered a more refined audio experience, particularly in complex soundtracks where clarity and detail are paramount. The Anthem AVM 70, while delivering excellent audio, did not match the Marantz's versatility in video processing and streaming capabilities.
Limitations and Considerations: What to Keep in Mind
While the Marantz AV8805A excels in many areas, it is essential to consider a few limitations. The price point, approximately $3,199, may be steep for some consumers, particularly those who may not require all the advanced features it offers. Additionally, the unit's weight and size may pose installation challenges for those with limited space.
Furthermore, while the user interface is generally intuitive, some users may find the initial setup process to be complex, particularly if they are not familiar with home theater systems. It may require a learning curve to fully utilize all the features, particularly the calibration settings and streaming options.
